Booxfactor
2009

December saw the return of our brilliant Teen Festival, Booxfactor, to West Dunbartonshire. The festival heralded a week of fantasy, magic and imagination in the School Libraries and Art Departments of our secondary schools. This Teen Writers Festival, supported by Educational Services and West Dunbartonshire Libraries, is a very special festival aimed at teenagers in our six secondary schools. This year we had another inspiring array of graphic artists and writers holding workshops, presentations and readings. Writers such as the charismatic Alan Bisset appeared as well as the ever-popular Metaphrog. Pupils were also treated to great workshops from the outstanding graphic artist Gary Erskine and up-and-coming manga artist Yishan Li. The pupil’s reactions were extremely positive, as you can see...

Metaphrog, a highly individual franco-scottish duo who were recently commissioned to adapt the Edwin Morgan poem ‘The First Men on Mercury’ for National Poetry Day, copies of which were sent out to 32,500 school children in Glasgow.

I thought the event was excellent. It was fun, interesting and overall an enjoyable experience. Pupil, Clydebank High School

I thought the presentation was very good. The job they do seemed very interesting. The ‘Louis’ comic was extremely good, and the artwork was fantastic. Pupil, Clydebank High School

I thought the event was very interesting to watch because it influences people to make comics... They [Metaphrog] taught the class to draw characters and we got the chance to make characters which was fun. Pupil, Clydebank High School

I thought the event was very interesting and not what I expected. It was very good to have more than one speaker and the visual aids were fantastic. Pupil, Clydebank High School

Alan Bissett, who has taught creative writing at Glasgow University, and has produced several books including ‘Boy Racers’.

I found the event very enjoyable and fun. It gave me a better perspective on life as a writer. Pupil, Clydebank High School

I thought that Alan was a very confident and funny man, which I enjoyed. His books are full on, and funny which reflects his personality... I liked the fact that he was from Scotland and had become a successful author which inspires people, as well as myself, even though I am not the best at English. Pupil, Clydebank High School

I thought that the visit was fun and enjoyable. His books were easy to relate to. I felt that he was very good at talking about writing and his book overall was good. Pupil, Dumbarton Academy It was great. His books were very interesting and Alan was very funny. He seemed very comfortable speaking to the group and created a great atmosphere. Pupil, Dumbarton Academy

We had an amazing time. We thought it was really interesting and fun making our own heroes up. Gary was amazing at teaching us and we hope that he will teach us again sometime. Pupil, Clydebank High School

I think the event has been great and a lot of fun as I like drawing and I think that Gary is a good drawer. Pupil, Our Lady and Saint Patricks

Yishan Li is a professional manga artist living in Edinburgh, who has been published worldwide in China, America, France and the UK.

I loved the event. It was fun and I always wondered how people draw that type of art [manga]. Pupil, Vale of Leven Academy

It was very interesting to see Yishan’s work. She makes it look so easy and is very good at it. I liked that she broke it down and showed us how to draw manga people. Pupil, Vale of Leven Academy

I really enjoyed the event and want to do it again. I liked how simple lines can work together to create eye catching characters and show the mood of the drawing. Pupil, Our Lady and St Patrick’s

I thought it was interesting and it’s given me an obsession with manga. Pupil, St Peter the Apostle
New Children's Library Card
We're pleased to reveal our brand new children's library card, designed by award winning illustrator, Catherine Rayner!

Catherine used 'Harris' from her book, 'Harris Finds His Feet', for our new card. Her book recently made international news when it won the 2009 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal for distinguished illustration.

Catherine judged our 'design a library card' competition in 2008, and visited the school of the winning entrant. When asked to design a new card for us, Catherine was only too happy to help out. Take a look at our new card design below.

Remember, that if you have an old 'WD' library card, you can exchange it for one of our new ones FREE of charge!

Harris the Hare
P1 of St Michael's Primary School went to Dumbarton Library recently to see the launch of the new 'Harris the Hare' Library Cards.

Councillor May Smillie (Spokesperson for Educational Services) spoke to the children who were then entertained by the Young People's Library Services Team reading the stories of Catherine Rayner, who generously donated the design of the new Library Card.
