Class visits to your local library
An Invitation for teachers to bring your class to the local library
We offer a programme of primary school class visits to our libraries. The programme aims to give all Primary Schools in West Dunbartonshire the opportunity to visit their local Library. Library visits encourage an enjoyment of reading and promote creativity. They give pupils the opportunity to develop good research skills, and to learn in a community setting.
Class visits are a great way for libraries and schools to work in partnership to:
- promote reading for pleasure and encourage home reading
- provide an opportunity for children of all ages and backgrounds to visit the library
- familiarise children with library services and how to access them
- encourage children to join the library
- support language and literacy development
- foster the development of lifelong learning skills
- promote the development of citizenship
- encourage pupils to return to the library independently
- demonstrate how library resources can help children with schoolwork
- encourage creativity
We have a rolling programme that targets three specific primary groupings throughout the school year. The visits are co-ordinated by the Learning Development Team and each visit is tailored to the particular age group. The programme is designed to support the school curriculum whilst being delivered in a fun and imaginative way.

Additional Visits
The Class Visits programme has been introduced with the aim of reaching as many children as possible in West Dunbartonshire. However, if you would like to apply for additional visits to your local library for a class or small group of pupils, you are very welcome to contact your local library directly, and co-ordinate this with the Senior Library Assistant. Examples of these types of visits may be to exchange books, or to use library resources to research a school topic/project.
