Library FAQs
Want to know more about your library service? This is the place to start...

We've picked out our five top frequently asked questions (FAQs) below, and provided a wider range of information in each of the sections in the menu on the left.
How do I join the library?
Library membership is open to anyone who lives, works or studies in West Dunbartonshire, and we even have a membership for visitors just passing through.

All you need to do is visit your local library and fill in an application form. For full membership we require two forms of ID, one of which should have your current address recorded. If you have no ID, or are just visiting the area, you can join as an 'Interim Member' which limits how many items you can borrow.

Everyone can join the library no matter how old they are. If you're under 14 however, we will require your parent or guardian to sign a consent form.

Can I join the library online?

Not yet, but we're working on it! We're currently developing an online form to apply for library membership. Applications made online will be processed with five working days, and applicants will receive a phone call or letter to tell them their new library card is ready for collection.
What membership categories are there?
Membership categories are usually determined by your age and ID provided when you join the library.

Our categories are explained below:
  • Junior - Age 0-11
  • Teen - Age 12-14
  • Young Adult - Age 15-17
  • Adult - Age 18+
For each of the above, we also have an 'Interim' version for visitors or people with no ID available (borrowing rights are limited - see the FAQ on borrowing entitlements for more details). Also, we can allocate any of these categories with 'No PC Access' if our range of ICT faciltities aren't required, or 'Mobile Service' for our mobile library users.
What can I borrow?
Not everyone knows, but we have much more than just books!

We lend a wide range of items including books, talking books (on CD, cassette and MP3 player), music CDs, children's DVDs, educational DVDs, feature film DVDs, videos, language packs, CD ROMS, maps, and even USB memory sticks!

Although some libraries may not stock all of these items, remember that it's FREE to reserve any item for collection from ANY library.

For more information on how many of each item you can borrow, download our 'Borrowing Entitlements' document by clicking here. This document is updated annually, every April.
How much does it cost?
Library membership is free, and it's our ethos to keep our services free wherever we can.

Even then, when we have to charge for something, rest assured that we will keep the costs as low as possible.

For information on our current charges, click here. This document is updated annually, every April.
